Photography Will Slowly Bleed You Dry – And You’ll Smile As It Does

Photography Will Slowly Bleed You Dry – And You’ll Smile As It Does

Every beginner photographer once thought:

“All I need is a camera, then I can start shooting!”

Until you realize… the camera is just an excuse to begin an endless spending spree.

1. The gear is never “enough”

You buy the camera… then realize you need a lens.

You get the lens… then need filters.

You have filters… now you need a tripod.

Got a tripod… then need a specialized camera bag.

You finally have it all… and then a new model comes out, making you feel outdated.

Your new catchphrase becomes:

“I don’t want to buy more, but this one is really necessary.”

2. More charging than shooting

You thought holding a camera meant shooting. Nope.

You’ll spend more time:

  • Charging batteries, swapping them, worrying they’re dying
  • Cleaning memory cards, deleting files, reformatting
  • Plugging devices into your computer to back up — and realizing your hard drive is nearly full

Bleeding, Level 2: You start buying SSDs, NAS systems, backup drives, and high-speed memory cards.

But hard drives have no mercy — they just die without warning, taking 5,000 of your most beloved photos with them.

3. Software – small things that bite hard

Photoshop and Lightroom seem cheap — until they silently bill you every month.

You’ve used Lightroom forever, but now… everyone’s switching to Capture One.

Presets: You buy one, then another — because “this one has amazing colors!”

Then you sit in front of your computer, waiting for a 50MB file to load, thinking:

“Maybe I should upgrade my RAM. Actually… screw it, let’s just buy a new computer.”

4. Going out to shoot: exhausting, expensive, addictive

When you’re not shooting, you miss it. But when you do:

  • The sun makes you sweat
  • The rain gets you muddy
  • You climb mountains, wade through fields, or sit on highways just to capture that golden moment

You eat instant noodles, rent a sketchy motorbike, sleep in a stranger’s home — but you’ll gladly drop 15 million VND just to catch the sunrise breaking through the clouds in Sapa.

In those moments, you don’t feel poor. You just feel:

“As long as there’s beautiful light, it’s all worth it.”

5. And then, you cross the point of no return

You start taking jobs — not to make a lot of money, but just enough to upgrade your gear.

You start teaching photography — not because you’re perfect, but because you’ve scraped and struggled enough to have stories worth sharing.

You start noticing light falling through a window and think:

“If I had an 85mm lens to backlight this… it would be stunning.”

Welcome to the world of photography — where your wallet burns, but your soul flourishes.

Conclusion: Photography won’t kill you – it seduces you into going broke

It’ll drain your money, gently.

It’ll leave you exhausted — yet smiling at the photo you just took.

It teaches you how to observe, how to be patient, how to wait.

And most importantly: it makes you feel truly alive.

“Photography doesn’t need you to be rich — just to love it enough to pay the price.”
